Algunas noticias tras la vuelta

Tras el parón de los meses de julio y agosto traigo unas cuantas novedades significativas y quizás no muy buenas.

Este blog nació para daros a conocer canciones nuevas, antíguas, desconocidas por algunos... pero sobre todo como un hobby. Desgraciadamente ya no podré dedicarle tanto tiempo como antes porque otros proyectos ocupan parte de mi vida.

Por esto mismo voy a transformar el blog en un grupo de facebook, donde seguiré dedicando una canción al día. De esta forma toda la información que ofrecía en cada entrada se reducirá drásticamente. La ventaja es que podré seguir con este proyecto sin que me ocupe mucho tiempo ni que me aburra, el inconveninete para los que no tengan facebook es que sólo se podrá seguir por alli, pero eso se puede solucionar :)

Michael Jackson - Beat it

Desde aquí nos unimos al homenaje mundial al rey del pop tras su fallecimiento con "Beat it". La canción se publicó como single en 1983, tras otro de los grandes éxitos de Michael, "Billie Jean". Además aparecía en "Thriller" (1982) el álbum más vendido de la historia de la música.

"Beat it" era la primera aproximación de Michael al rock. En anteriores ocasiones había afirmado no estar muy interesado en dicho género musical pero su co-productor Quincy Jones, quería que el artista grabara una canción mezcla de rock&roll y funk. Al final contaron con la colaboración de Eddie Van Halen (guitarrista de Van Halen) para la grabación del solo de guitarra.

El videoclip de la canción está dirigido por Bob Giraldi. La coreografía de masas de este videoclip (que corre a cargo de Michael Peters) junto con la de Thriller se convirtieron en el sello personal del cantante, uno de los motivos por el que se le recordará como artista.

We want also to pay tribute to the king of pop after his death with "Beat it". The song was released as single on 1983, after he released another greatest hit of Michael, "Billie Jean". Also it appeared on "Thriller" (1982), the most selled album of the music history.

"Beat it" was the first approximation of Michael to rock. On previous times he said that he wasn't interested on that music style but his co-producer Quincy Jones wanted that he recorded a black rock&roll song. At the end they count with the help of Edie Van Halen (Van Halen's guitarist) for the record of the guitar solo.

The video of the song is directed by Bob Giraldi. The huge choreography of this video (which work is in charge of Michael Peters) became, with Thriller, the principal characteristic of the singer, one more reason to remind him as an artist.

Air - Venus

El último lunes de junio se lo dedicamos a Air, duo francés de electrónica habituales en las soundtracks de los films de Sofia Coppola.

Desde 1997 Air ha publicado siete álbums (y viene otro en camino) con colaboraciones de Gordon Tracks o Beck. Nos vamos a centrar en "Talkie Walkie" (2004), donde encontrábamos "Venus". El título del álbum es un homenaje a uno de los álbums de Sergé Gainsbourg, mayor influencia de la banda, y "Venus" es el track que abría el álbum.

The last Monday of June we will talk about Air, a French electronic duo usuals on soundtracks of Sofia Coppola's films.

Since 1997 Air has published seven albums (another album is coming) with collaborations of Gordon Tracks or Beck. We will focus on "Talkie Walkie" (2004), where we can find "Venus". The title of the album is a tribute to one of the Sergé Gainsbourg's albums, biggest influence of the band, and "Venus" is the track that opened this album.

Mew - Comforting sounds

Llegamos al domingo con Mew, un trío danés formado a mediados de los 90 y aún en activo. Son bastante conocidos dentro del panorama indie de su país.

Su mayor éxito comercial es "Frengers" (2003) su tercer álbum el cual está producido por Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Muse...). Actualmente la banda ha vuelto a trabajar con Costey para la grabación de su nuevo álbum. "Frengers", que según a banda es ua mezcla entre las palabras friend (amigo) y stranger (extraño), incluía "Comforting sounds". El track, de nueve minutos, que cierra el disco fué el single de presentación de dicho álbum.

En cuanto al videoclip de la canción en su versión de cuato minutos, está dirigido por Sam Brown.

Today, Sunday, we will talk about Mew, a trio from Denmark formed at the middle of the 90's and they are still on active service. They are pretty known on the indie panorama of their country.

Their greatest hit is "Frengers" (2003), their third album which it was produced by Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Muse...). Now, the band is working with him again for the recording of their new album. "Frengers", that according to the band is a mix of the words friend and stranger, included "Comforting sounds". The song, that last nine minutes, close the disc and it was the first single of the album.

The video of the song that last four minutes is directed by Sam Brown.

Jarvis Cocker - Angela

El que fuera líder de Pulp, Jarvis Cocker, publicó en mayo "Further complications", su segundo álbum en solitario. Para muchos éste álbum tiene sonidos más contundentes acercándose al garage en comparación al LP anterior, "Jarvis" (2006)

Todo comenzó el año pasado, cuando Jarvis conoció al productor Steve Albini en un festival de música. Ambos comenzaron a trabajar juntos y a grabar las nuevas canciones que compondrían el nuevo disco. El día que se publicó "Further complications" Jarvis promocionó el álbum trabajando en la cadena de tiendas HMV en Londres, vendiendo su disco y haciendo recomendaciones a los clientes.

Angela es el primer single, una canción mezcla glam mezcla garage que habla de una niña de dicho nombre. En el sencillo videoclip podemos ver a Jarvis con su banda interpretando la canción en plena calle.

Jarvis Cocker, who was leader of Pulp, published on May "Further Complications", his second solo album. For much people, this album has heavier sounds closing to garage rock compared to the previous album, "Jarvis" (2006).

All started last year when Jarvis met the producer Steve Albini on a music festival. Both started to work together and to record new songs that would form the new album. The day that "Further Complications" was released, Jarvis promoted the album working on the HMV chain store of London, selling his disc and making musical advices to the clients.

Angela is the first single, a song that mix glam and garage that speaks about a girl with the same name. On the simple video we can watch Jarvis and his band playing the song on the street.

The white stripes - Blue orchid

Jack y Meg White forman uno de los mejores grupos de la década. Aunque la mayoría de la gente los conoce por el ya himno "Seven Nation Army", entre su discografía destacan también otros singles como este Blue Orchid.

La canción presentaba el álbum "Get behind me, Satan" (2005) álbum que seguía la estela de su predecesor, "Elephant", en cuanto a llevar una producción básica pero en el que cobraba mayor protagonismo el piano. Por todo esto "Get behind me, Satan" ganó el grammy al mejor álbum de rock alternativo en el 2006.

Blue Orchid comienza con uno de los riffs de guitarra más reconocibles de todos los tiempos y para obtenerlo Jack grabó diversas pistas para luego solaparlas y comprimirlas hasta que parecieran una sola. Las malas lenguas dicen que la letra hace referencia al final de la relación entre Jack y Renée Zellweger.

El videoclip, dirigido por Floria Segismondi, ha sido catalogado como uno de los videoclips más terroríficos de todos los tiempos por Yahoo. Estaba protagonizado por la modelo Karen Elson con la que Jack se casaría meses después.

Jack y Meg White form one of the best bands of the decade. Although most of the people know them because of "Seven Nation Army", on their discography we can find another important singles as Blue Orchid.

Hoy os tremos una banda poco conocida por nuestras tierras. The Lodger es una banda británica formada en el 2004 en Leeds, cuando la discográfica de la ciudad les ofreció publicar un single de las grabaciones que Ben Siddall (líder de la banda) había realizado en su habitación.

Al principio a Ben lo acompañaban dos amigas a la batería y al bajo que tras la pulicación del primer álbum, "Grown-ups", abandonaron la formación y fueron reemplazadas por Joe y Bruce, la formación actual.

"Let her go" fué uno de los singles de "Grown-ups", y curiosamente fué publicado antes que el propio LP. Está producida por Alan Smyth (Arctic Monkeys). Junto con Los Campesinos! de los que hablábamos el otro día, The Lodger fué uno de los mejores descubrimientos del 2007. Today we bring you a band pretty unknown here. The Lodger is a British band formed in 2004 on Leeds, when the record company of the city offered them release a single of the songs that Ben Siddall - leader of the band - has recorded on his room.

At the beginning Ben was accompanied by two friends as drummer and as bassist but after the publication of the first album, "Grown-ups", they left the band and they were replaced by Joe and Bruce, the current band.

"Let her go" was one of the singles of "Grown-ups", and oddly, it was released before the LP was released. It's produced by Alan Smith (Arctic Monkeys). Sidonie - Fascinado

Continuamos la semana con este trío barcelonés que se formó a finales de los noventa. Se introdujeron en el mundo de la música gracias a un concurso de jóvenes talentos de Hospitalet y, tras un par de maquetas, la fama les llegó con su disco de nombre homónimo "Sidonie".

De ese disco un par de canciones sirvieron de sintonía en un anuncio de FNAC y en otro de una campaña del Gobierno el cual trajo polémica ya que la banda no estaba de acuerdo con lo que se decía en ese anuncio.

Después de varios discos, Sony les contrató y desde entonces todos sus discos han estado compuestos íntegramente en castellano. El primero de esos discos fue "Fascinado", donde podemos encontrar la canción del mismo nombre, la cual fue el primer single. Disfrutad de esta pegadiza canción.

Today we will talk about a trio from Barcelona that was formed at the end of the 90's. They made themself known thanks to a young talent contest of Hospitalet and, after a couple of demos, fame came to them with their homonym disc "Sidonie".

A couple of songs of that disc were the songs of a FNAC commercial and a Government campaign commercial that had controversy because the band were not agree with the commercial said.

After some discs, Sony signed them up and since then all their discs have all the songs on Spanish language. The first of that discs was "Fascinado", where we can find the song with the same name which it was the first single. Enjoy this catchy song.

The breeders - Cannonball

The breeders fué un proyecto paralelo de Kim Deal (bajista de Pixies) y Tanya Donelly (guitarrista de Throwing Muses) en 1988, tras que ambos grupos se tomaran un descanso tras la gira que habían compartido.

Tras su álbum debut, Pod (1989), y un EP Safari (1991) llegó el álbum Last Splash. Aquí encontrábamos el single Cannonball, el one hit wonder de la banda y uno de los 50 mejores himnos indie según la revista NME.

El videoclip está dirigido por Kim Gordon (bajista de Sonic Youth) junto con el cineasta Spike Jonze y en él vemos a la banda tocando en un garaje alternando dichas imágenes con otras de una bala de cañón recorriendo diversas calles.

The breeders was a paralel project of Kim Deal (bassist of The Pizies) and Tanya Donelly (guitarist of Throwing Muses) on 1988, after both bands had a break after the tour that they have shared.

Los Campesinos! - You! me! dancing!

Los Campesinos son un grupo indie originario de Gales formado en el 2006 en la universidad de Cardiff. La instrumentación que te puedes encontrar en los discos de estos chicos puede recordar a la empleada por Broken Social Scene pero con un sonido más contundente.

En el 2008 y bajo el sello discográfico Wichita, publicaron sus dos primeros álbumes. El primero "Hold on now, youngster" fué recibido con muy buenas críticas. Unos meses más tarde se editó "We are beautiful, we are doomed" que aunque seguí la estela de su predecesor no incluía importantes singles. Se prevé que en unos meses ya podremos escuchar su nuevo álbum elaborado con un componente menos ya que hace unas semanas Aleks anunciaba que dejaba la banda.

"You! me! dancing!", primer single de "Hold on now, youngster", es una canción que va de menos a más, perfecta para comenzar la semana. El apocalíptico videoclip animado está realizado por Monkmus. Os dejo con él.

Los Campesinos are an indie band from Wales formed in 2006 on the Cardiff University. The instrumentation that you can find on the discs of this guys can remind you the music used by Broken Social Scene but with a heavy sound.

Vetusta Morla & C. Rosenvinge - Chicago

Hoy es día mundial de la música y con motivo de dicha celebración en nuestro país hemos disfrutado de un proyecto bastante curioso.

A finales de mayo nos enteramos de que el periódico El País junto con Heineken y Radio3 regalaban a sus lectores una canción al día que podría ser descargada gratuítamente desde su web. Éstas serían diversas versiones realizada por cantantes del panorama indie nacional. Así, podíamos descubrir cómo Templeton y Alondra Bentley versionaban "Crazy" de Gnarls Barkley o Inhabitants y CatPeople se decantaban por un cover de la canción de Vampire Weekend "Cape Cod kwasa kwasa".

La primera que se dió a conocer es esta canción que ya apareció por nuestro blog en su versión original interpretada por Sufjan Stevens. Ambos darán desde Madrid el pistoletazo de salida a los conciertos que hoy se celebran gratuítamente en Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia y Ourense.

Today is the World Music Day and because of this day we have enjoyed of a very interesting proyect on Spain.

At the end of May we could know that El País newspaper with Heineken and Radio 3 gave away a song each day that it could be downloaded on their website for free. This songs were covers singed by Spanish indie singers. So, we could know that Templeton and Alondra Bentley covered "Crazy" of Gnarls Barkley or Inhabitants and CatPeople choose the Vampire Weekend's song "Cape Cod kwasa kwasa".

The first song that we knew was this song that appeared on its original version singed by Sufjan Stevens. Both will start on Madrid the concerts that today will be free on Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Ourense.

Hoy os presentamos una de las propuestas más divertidas de cara al verano que comienza. Yacht es un duo Estadounidense de electro-pop compuesto por Claire Evans y Jona Bechtolt. Las comparaciones con The Ting Tings son obvias aunque Yacht llegaron antes.

"Psychic City (Voodoo City)" es el primer single de "See mistery lights", álbum que será publicado el mes que viene. En este cuarto álbum también se encuentra "Summer song" la canción que Yacht dedicaron a LCD Soundsystem durante su gira conjunta.

La portada de dicho álbum, realizada por Boyd Elder, hace referencia a las "luces misteriosas", un fenómeno óptico paranormal que se da en algunos lugares del mundo.

"Psychic City (Voodoo City)" is the first single of "See mistery lights", an albumthat will released next month. On this fourth album you can find "Summer song" too, the song which Yacht dedicated to LCD Soundsystem during their joint tour.

The cover of that album, made it by Boyd Elder, makes reference to the "misterious lights", a paranormnal optical effect that you can see on some places of the world.

Belle & Sebastian - I don't love anyone

Belle & Sebastan vuelven a aparecer por este blog con la canción "I don't love anyone" del disco "Tigermilk" (1996). La historia del disco es un poco curiosa porque cuando fué publicado originalmente se pusieron a la venta 1000 copias por lo que pasó a considerarse toda una rareza. Más tarde, en 1999 se volvería a editar.

"Tigermilk" (que no tuvo ningún single) fue el primer disco de esta banda escocesa, pero han publicado hasta seis discos más sin contar las múltiples compilaciones y directos que han hecho.

Si su otra canción, de la cual hablamos aquí, apareció en "Juno", esta aparece en "El diablo viste de Prada". No existe vídeoclip así que os dejo con la canción.

Belle & Sebastian comes here again with the song "I don't love anyone" from Tigermilk's album (1996). The history about the album is quite curius because when the album was originally published it was on sale 1000 copies. That LP is considered a rarity. Later, in 1999 Tigermilk was reissued.

"Tigermilk" (which it wasen't have any single) was the first album of this scotish band, but they have published six studio albums more, many compilations and live albums.

If "Piazza, New York Catcher" (the other Belle and Sebastian's song which we talked here) appeared in Juno's OST, this one appears in the film "The devil wears Prada" It doesn't exist videoclip of "I don't loe anyone" so here is only the song.

Eulogies - One man

Eulogies es un cuarteto procedente de Los Ángeles con dos discos en el mercado. El primero fué editado en 2007 y se llama igual que la banda. Hace unas semanas publicaron el segundo, con un cambio en la formación ya que su bajista Tim Hutton dejó la banda el año pasado.

"One man" pertenece a su álbum debut, el cual fué autoeditado con la colaboración John Goodmanson (Radiohead, Blonde) en las labores de producción.

Sin duda es su canción más conocida. Ha aparecido en la serie de televisión Californication y es el único track con videoclip. Está dirigido por Laurent Briet y lo podeis ver a continuación.

Eulogies is a band from Los Ángeles with two discs released. The first disc was published in 2007 and the title is the same name than the name of the band. Some weeks ago they released the second album, with a change on the formation because its bassist Tim Hutton quit the band last year.

"One man" belongs to their first album, which it was released with the collaboration of John Goodmanson (Radiohead, Blonde) at the head of the production.

Undoubtedly this is their knowest song. It has appeared on the tv show Californication and it's the only track with video. The video is directed by Laurent Briet and you can watch it below.

Arcade Fire - Wake up

Los canadienses nos visitan otra vez con "Wake up" una de sus canciones candidata a convertirse en un himno con el paso del tiempo.

"Funeral", el multipremiado álbum debut de "Arcade Fire" y publicado en 2004, es fruto de los malos momentos que Win Butlers y Regine Casagnne pasaron en su proceso de grabación (ambos sufrieron pérdidas familiares). Sin embargo "Wake up" conserva un rayo de esperanza y de vitalidad, donde se anima a los jóvenes a vivir la vida antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

Durante el "Vertigo Tour" de U2 los escoceses empleaban dicha canción para abrir los conciertos e incluso se ha llegado a grabar una nueva versión de la canción para el nuevo film de Spike Jonze. Aquí os dejo con una versión en directo en la que Arcade Fire están acompañados por el camaleónico Bowie. Una gran colaboración para una gran canción.

However "Wake up" has a ray of hope and life, where they chher up young people to live life to the full before it's too late.

The band - The weight

Cruzamos el charco para hablar de el oldie de esta semana. The band fué una banda canadiense cuyo periodo de mayor auge se encuentra entre los años 60 y 70.

Su éxito a nivel mundial se debe sobre todo a "The weight", una canción que aparecía en su primer álbum "Music from Big Pink" (1968). La canción, una de las más importantes englobada en el movimiento contracultural de finales de los 60, cuenta la historia de un viajero que llega a Nazareth, un pueblo de Pennsylvania, donde dicho personaje va conociendo a sus extraños residentes. Curiosamente la banda Nazareth tomaría su nombre de esta canción.

Según contó Robertson (guiarrista de la banda y compositor de la canción) la canción está inspirada en algunos de los films de Buñuel donde los personajes intentan ser buenos aunque les sea imposible. Además todos los personajes de la canción realmente son personas que conoció Robertson a lo largo de su vida, según cuenta en su biografía.

Como la mayoría de los grandes clásicos del rock The weight ha sido versionada inumerables veces y ha aparecido en diversas películas. Una de ellas fué Easy Rider. Os dejo con la canción de hoy.

We cross the Ocean because we are going to talk about the oldie of this week. The band was a Canadian band which have a lot of success on the 60's and on the 70's.

Their greatest hit is "The weight", a song that appeared on their first album "Music from Big Pink" (1968). The song, one of the most important songs of the movement against politics at the end of the 60's, tells the story of a journey man that arrives to Nazareth, a town in Pennsylvania, where this person meet the weird people from the town. Oddly the band Nazareth took their name from this song.

According to Robertson - guitarrist of the band and composer of the song - the song is inspired on some Buñuel films where characters try to be good although that's impossible. Also all the characters of the song are really people that Robertson met on his life, according to his biography.

As the most part of the greatest classic rock song, The Weight has been covered a lot of times and it has appeared on some movies. One of that films was Easy Rider. Here is the song of today sounding.

Billie the Vision & The Dancers - Summercat

Y, gracias a la recomendación de Setra, parece que no salimos de las canciones usadas en spots publicitarios. Hoy le toca a la que se puede convertir en la canción del verano aquí en España.

Detrás de este nombre tan extraño se encuentra un grupo sueco de indie-folk cuyo lider, Lars Lindquist, nos podría recordar a Boy George tanto en su voz como en su estilismo. Toda su discografía se puede encontrar y descargar gratuítamente desde su web, algo que es de agradecer en los tiempos que corren.

"Summercat" aparecía en el álbum "I was so unpopular and now they are giving me this beautiful bycycle" publicado en el 2004 y desde entonces país por donde pasaban país donde han cosechado un gran éxito gracias a este hit. Ahora nos toca a nosotros. Curiosamente el videoclip de dicha canción es el propio anuncio de Estrella Damm en su versión extendida en donde incluso podemos ver a los miembros de la banda. Behind this weird name we can find a Swedish indie-folk band which leader, Lars Lindquist, can remind you to Boy George for his voice and for his style. We can find their whole discography on their website and we can download it for free - we should give thanks for this.

The Hives es una banda de garage rock formada en 1993, cuando sus componentes era aún adolescentes, y con cuatro álbumes en su haber.

Su último disco hasta ahora es "The black and white album" publicado en 2007, después de tres años de sequía, y su primer single fué este "Tick tick boom", canción cañera, como nos tienen acostumbrados estos suecos.

Existen dos vídeoclips de la canción: uno empleado en un anuncio de Nike en el que se ve a la banda actuando en directo y otro en el que los componentes son estatuas gigantes en un museo de arte. Con este nos quedamos.

A este blog llega una de las novedades más interesantes de lo que nos queda de año. Brian Burton y Mark Linkous, o lo que es lo mismo Danger mouse (Gnarls Berkley) y Sparklehorse, han decidido unir sus mentes talentosas para parir "Dark night of the soul" un proyecto multimedia bastante interesante

El título del álbum está extraído del libro homónimo escrito por San Juan de la Cruz "Noche oscura del alma". En el apartado visual decidieron contar con la ayuda del cineasta David Lynch que incluso se atreve a cantar en uno de los tracks. Pero no es la única colaboración del disco puesto que en cada track encontramos a algún músico de renombre tales como Iggy Pop, Nina Persson (The Cardigans) o James Mercer (The Shins).

La canción que hemos elegido para presentaros este disco cuenta con Julian Casablancas de The Strokes. "Little girl" es una de las mejores canciones que nos podemos encontrar en "Dark night of the soul". La última noticia que hay sobre el disco es que aún no se sabe si será publicado o no. One of the most interesting novelties of the year come to this blog. Brian Burton & Mark Linkous - a.k.a. Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) and Sparklehorse - have decided to join their talented minds for make "Dark noght of the soul", a multimedia project pretty interesting.

The title of the album come from the homonym book written by San Juan de la Cruz "Noche oscura del alma". On the visual section, they decided to count with the help of David Lynch that even sings on one of the songs. This is not the only collaboration of the disc because on each track we can find some known musician as Iggy Pop, Nina Persson (The Cardigans) or James Mercer (The Shins).

Simone White es una cantante folk estadounidense procedente de Oahu, Hawaii. Mientras que su primer álbum pasó sin pena ni gloria, para el segundo "I am the man" (2007) fichó por la discográfica EMI y contó con la ayuda de Mark Nevers (Calexico, Lambchop) en la producción del álbum. El tercero se publicará en este año y es por lo que hace unos meses Simone visitó España.

The beep beep song, de "I am the man", es su canción más conocida. Refleja muy bien su estilo: folk suave acompañado de la voz dulce de Simone. La canción te sonará puesto que se empleaba en el anuncio del Audi R8 en toda Europa.

El videoclip, de bajo presupuesto, está rodado en Santa Mónica con la ayuda de una amiga de la cantante en la dirección y con un par de cámaras digitales.

Despues de la separación de los australianos todos pensábamos que Wolfmother sería un grupo emergente con un genial y único álbum debut. Pero a finales del año pasado saltó la noticia: Wolfmother volvía de nuevo aunque con algunos cambios en su formación original.

Pero volvamos a "Wolfmother", su álbum debut. En el 2006 "Joker and the thief" era publicado como single convirtiéndose junto con "Woman" en uno de los hits del conjunto. Ha aparecido en diversos films: "Shrek 3", "Jackass number 2", y "Shoot 'em up". Como algunos ya sabrán el título de la canción hace referencia a la letra de "All along the watchtower" de Bob Dylan.

Weezer es una banda californiana con una larga carrera musical. No poseen grandes discos pero sí unos cuantos singles bastante conocidos. Uno de ellos es "Island in the sun".

Island in the sun pertenecía al álbum homónimo del 2001 al que se le conocía como "The green album" para distinguirle del disco debut de mismo nombre. La canción fué empleada en diversas series de televeisión y un anuncio de telefonía que le dió la fama a la canción aquí en España.

Existen dos vídeos de la canción: uno dirigido por Marcos Siega y en el que vemos una boda mejicana y otra dirigida por Spike Jonze con la banda actuando con animales salvajes. Este último es el más conocido y el que acompaña a la entrada.

Weezer are a band from California with a long musical career. They don't have great discs but they have a lot of single pretty known. One of them is "Island in the sun".

Retrocedemos 10 años en nuestro apartado semanal de oldies. Garbage es una banda americana que sigue en activo tras quince años en activo y con su carismática líder Shirley Manson al frente.

En 1998 el grupo publicó su álbum más importante "Version 2.0" donde se incluían sus mejores canciones: "I think I'm paranoid", "Special" y la archiconocida "When I grow up" coreada y utilizada en diversos anuncios televisivos.

También la encontrábamos en el soundtrack del film de Adam Sandler "Big Daddy" y para ello se elaboró otro videoclip que contenía imágenes de la película. Nosotros nos quedamos con el videoclip original donde se veían diversas actuaciones de la banda en uno de los tours que realizaron por Norteamérica.

The Jayhawks es una banda de folk-rock con toques country originaria de Minneapolis. A pesar de sus más de 20 años de carrera musical no son muy conocidos por el público mayoritario.

Su último trabajo hasta la fecha, el séptimo de su carrera, es "Rainy Day Music", publicado en el 2003. Para muchos fué el álbum con el que volvieron a sus orígenes antes de separarse aunque uno de sus líderes originales, Mark Olson, no participó en dicho disco. Ahí encontramos "Save it for a rainy day", sin duda alguna, la mejor canción del grupo en esta década y que es más que seguro aparezca en el recopilatorio que la banda pondrá a la venta el mes que viene.

El videoclip está dirigido por Brian Dannelly y cuenta con la colaboración de la actriz Mary-Louis Parker. Los fans de Weeds y de su protagonista estáis de enhorabuena. :)

The Jayhawks are a folk-rock band with country touches from Minneapolis. Although they were 20 years on active service they are not pretty known.

Their last disc for now, the seventh disc of their career, is "Rainy Day Music", released in 2003. According to a lot of people, it was the album which they went back to their origins before they broke up although one of their original members, Mark Olson, didn't participate on the disc. We can find there "Save it for a rainy day", undoubtedly, the best song of the band on this decade and it's pretty sure that it will be on the compilation disc that the band will released next month.

Los de Nashville vuelven a este blog con uno de sus primeros éxitos. Tras el éxito cosechado en su país de origen con su primer LP, "Youth and young Mahood" (2003) Kings of Leon pretendía conquistar el mercado europeo.

En 2004 publicaron su siguiente álbum "Aha shake heartbreak" que sería publicado seis meses antes en Reino Unido que en Estados Unidos y para darlo a conocer publicaron como primer single "The bucket". La letra de dicha canción se inspira en el componente más joven del grupo, Jared Followill, al que le llegó la fama con 17 años.

El videoclip que podeis ver a continuación está dirigido por Patrick Daughters, responsable también de otros vídeos como "1, 2, 3, 4" de Feist o el nuevo single de Depeche Mode, "Wrong".

Después publicaron su primer álbum, llamado "Summer of hate" un álbum donde se mezclan punk y sintetizadores dando a todas las canciones un toque ochentero. Es el caso de "I wanna kill" que si al oirla me hubieran dicho que es una canción de los ochenta me lo hubiera creído.

Y por fin llegamos al viernes con una nueva banda. Se trata de "The joy formidable", un trío galés (antes cuarteto de nombre "Sidecar Kisses)" que debuta con el álbum "A ballon called moaning".

Su primer single, "Austere" se publicó el verano pasado y es una pieza de indie pop soñador. Fué empleado en en los trailers de la serie británica "Skins" lo que contribuyó al éxito que han cosechado en Gran Bretaña.

Después vino "Cradle" donde, como en "Austere", vuelve a destacar la original voz de Ritzy Brian. El videoclip que acompaña a la canción está dirigido por Neil James Drummond y sigue el movimiento sube y baja del columpio que "protagoniza" el mismo.

El 2007 fué el año para este sexteto de Missouri. Las once pistas que contenía su álbum debut "Fort Nightly" fueron una de las sorpresas que nos deparó dicho año. Hace unos días se puso a la venta "It's frightening" un disco más tranquilo comparado con su predecesor quizas porque la producción corre a cargo de Britt Daniel (Spoon).

Pero volvamos a "Fort Nightly" y a su canción más sonada. "Kid on my shoulders" es una buena muestra del rock contundente de sus canciones. Podeis disfrutar de un directo de la canción a continuación.

La banda de la que hablaremos hoy nos traslada a los Estados Unidos de los 60. Aunque no han pasado a la historia al mismo nivel que otros grupos de su época, Love es una de las bandas que más ha influenciado a grupos posteriores (Jesus & Mary Chain o The Stone Roses por mencionar algunos).

Su carrera no fué muy extensa aunque sí prolífica. Su álbum más conocido fué "Forever Changes" de 1967. "Alone again or", escrita por Brian MacLean para el álbum debut de la banda y después desechada, abría el disco. En su momento no fué una canción muy exitosa pero con el tiempo se ha convertido en un clásico siendo así la canción más versionada de Love.

Esta banda originaria de Los Angeles inaugura esta semana con su primer gran éxito "I'm a terrible person".

Por el 2002 la banda fichó por la discográfica Geffen Records para grabar su primer LP de título homónimo al grupo. En 2003 "Rooney" ya estaba en las calles pero no sería hasta el 2004 cuando su música comenzara a ser conocida.

Tras la aparición del grupo en la serie The OC y en un anuncio de Carolina Herrera, "I'm a terrible person" se convirtió en su canción más coreada en los conciertos como el que podeis ver en el video de a continuación.

Por motivos de agenda ayer no hubo entrada pero hoy sí. Llegamos al domingo con Polar, una banda valenciana con muchos años de carrera a sus espaldas (comenzaron en 1997).

A pesar de no disfrutar de gran renombre en España son de los pocos que pueden presumir de tener un sonido propio y de haber versionado muy dignamente grandes temas en su recopilatorio Feedback (2008).

En 2006 publicaban "Surrounded by happiness", un disco que prosigue con el estilo slowcore que tanto les caracteriza. Aunque el título suene melancólico, Polar explica que “Lo que intentamos decir es que esa felicidad está continuamente a nuestro alrededor, pero es difícil llegar a tocarla”. Os dejamos con Tunnel, una de las canciones que aparecía en dicho LP.

Although they are not very famous on Spain they are one of the few bands who can boast about having their own sound and they also can boast about have covered very well great songs on their compilation album Feedback (2008).

Este viernes toca novedad y como tal traemos hoy un disco inusual.

Iron & Wine (alias, Sean Beam) ha publicado hace unos días un disco doble de rarezas titulado "Around the well" bajo el sello Subpop. En él encontraremos tanto canciones propias como versiones e incluso material inédito.

"Love Vigilantes" es una versión de los New Order que Sean Beam lleva cantando en sus directos desde hace algunos años, como podeis ver en el video de esta entrada. Es interesante ver como el estilo propio de la canción original se transforma en una canción folk.

Dicen que lo bueno se hace esperar y aunque ya hace más de seis meses que se abrió este blog esta es la primera vez que traemos a NIN.

A finales de los 80 Trent Reznor, alma mater de Nine Inch Nails, trabajaba en un estudio de grabación y gracias a ello pudo grabar el primer álbum bajo este nombre. Trent, ha compuesto todas las canciones de su carrera musical y toca cada uno de los instrumentos que se pueden escuchar en los discos.

En 2005, y tras una dura batalla de Reznor contra el alcohol y las drogas, se publicó "With Teeth" el disco que incluía "The Hand That Feeds". La canción es un ataque verbal hacia el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos, específicamente a la Administración de Bush y su política extranjera. El videoclip está dirigido por el mismo Reznor junto con la ayuda de Rob Sheridan, habitual en los videos de NIN.

At the end of the eighties Trent Reznor, alma mater of Nine Inch Nails, worked on a record company and thanks to that he could record the first disc with this name. Trent has composed all the songs of his musical career and he plays each instrument which you can listen on his discs.

In 2005, and after a hard battle of Reznor against alcohol and drugs, "With Teeth" was published, the disc that included "The Hand That Feeds". The song is a verbal attack to the United States Government, specifically to the Bush Administration and their inmigration politic. The video is directed by Renzor with the help of Rob Sheridan, usual on the videos of NIN.

Este quinteto de Brooklyn se dió a conocer en el 2004, cuando publicaron "Horn of Plenty", su primer disco. Se convirtieron en cuarteto al publicar "Yellow House" en 2006, considerado uno de los mejores álbumes del año según la crítica especializada.

La acústica "Knife" apareció como primer single de "Yellow House". Personalmente me recuerda a algunas canciones de "White blood cells" de los White Stripes sobre todo por el sonido tan contundente.

El videoclip de dicha canción está realizado por encyclopedia pictura, un par de chicos de San Francisco que se abren paso en el mundo de los videoclips musicales gracias a este video y a alguno realizado para Björk. Además del vídeo podeis oir aquí un cover de la canción interpretado por CSS.

En 1996 Nick Cave publicó "Murder Ballads", su noveno álbum inspirado en poemas y canciones tradicionales que contaban crímenes pasionales. Sólo alguien como Cave podría grabar un disco así.

El álbum se convirtió en el mayor éxito del australiano hasta ese momento y a ello contribuyó "Where The Wild Roses Grow" el dúo que grabó con la que fuera su pareja en ese momento, Kylie Minogue. Está inspirada en "Down in the willow garden", una canción tradicional.

El vídeo está dirigido por Rocky Shenck donde Cave es el asesino y Minogue, Elisa Day. La posición de la muerte de la chica es un homenaje al cuadro "Ophelia", de Millais.

The Veils es una banda independiente liderada por el cantante y compositor Finn Andrews (muchas veces comparado con Nick Cave). Andrews es el hijo de Barry Andrews, componente de la banda new wave de los 80 XTC.

Su segundo disco "Nux Vomica" (2006) es el que mayor éxito y mejores críticas ha obtenido y sin duda alguna su mayor hit es este "Advice for young mothers to be". La semana pasada el grupo se pasó por Valencia para presentar su nuevo disco "Sun Gangs" pero nosotros nos quedamos con el mencionado single: "Advice for young mothers to be". Que lo disfruten.

The knife es un dúo sueco compuesto por Karin Dreijer Andersson y Olof Dreijer cuyo reconocimiento y fama llegó cuando José González versionó su canción "Heartbeats". Aunque se formaron en 1999 no sería hasta 2006 cuando saldrían de gira por primera vez.

Su cuarto álbum se titula "Silent Shout" (2006) y está publicado bajo el sello que ellos mismos crearon, Rabid Records. Este disco es el último editado por el duo antes de que Karin publicara su primer disco en solitario con el nombre de Fever Ray. "Marble house" es uno de los singles que aparecía en "Silent Shout".

De la canción se hicieron dos vídeos diferentes. En uno vemos a una colonia Británica en Asia entre los siglos XVIII y XIX y el que aparece en esta entrada, dirigido por Chris Hopewell, en el que vemos la vida diaria de una familia de ratones.

Este sábado os traemos una novedad. La banda Metric (relacionada con otras bandas como Stars o Broken social scene) es natural de Canadá y se formó en 1998 en Nueva York.

El mes pasado publicaron su cuarto álbum "Fantasies" pero su primer sencillo, este "Help! I'm alive" lleva sonando desde principios de año. La canción está escrita en Argentina por la vocalista del grupo, Emily Haines. Contiene un estribillo pegadizo y un sonido de sintetizadores muy pulido.

El videoclip de la canción está dirigido por Deco Dawson. En este caso las imágenes del grupo interpretando la canción están acompañadas por animaciones y dibujos.

Aunque desde hace unas semanas ya podemos disfrutar del nuevo disco (Sounds of the universe) de esta mítica banda vamos a comenzar el fin de semana con la canción que fuera el single de presentación de "Playing the angel"

En 2005, y tras la vuelta de la banda a los primeros puestos de ventas con el remix que Mike Shinoda realizó de "Enjoy the silence", Depeche Mode publicaba su disco de estudio número 11, el primero con canciones escritas por Gahan desde 1990.

"Precious", escrita por Gore, habla de los hijos del compositor tras la separación de Gore y su esposa mientras que el vídeo poco tiene que ver con esto. El clip, dirigido por Uwe Flade (Franz Ferdinand, Rammstein), presenta una nave interestelar vacía donde el grupo se encuentra.

Cruzamos el charco hasta Canada, de donde vienen Wintersleep. La banda se formó en el 2002 publicando hasta este 2009 tres discos y ganando el año pasado el Juno Award al mejor nuevo grupo.

"Welcome to the night sky" es su último disco publicado hasta ahora. En él contaron con el productor Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian). "Archaeologists" (2008) es su último single, una canción que podría llegar a convertirse en un himno pop si no fuera porque aquí aún son poco conocidos.

El track carece de videoclip así que símplemente os dejo con la canción. Que la disfruteis.

Seguimos con grupos británicos. Hoy es el turno de un grupo de culto, Comet Gain, una banda compuesta por un ex-Morrisey/The Meteors, un ex-Huggy Bear y otros dos componentes.

Desde 1992 son seis los álbumes que han publicado. En 2005 llegó "City fallen leaves" álbum en el que destacan los sintetizadores y los órganos. El hit "The Fists in the pocket" es una canción melancólica de estribillo pegadizo ideal para comenzar el día, quizás una de las pocas salvables del LP.

Espero que la canción os anime a comenzar el día mejor, que ya estamos a mitad de semana. :) Os dejo con el vídeo.

Since 1992 they have released six albums. On 2005 "City fallen leaves" was released. On that album the synthesizers and the organs are stressed. Retomamos este martes la sección de oldies con una de las canciones más antiguas que han pasado por este blog. Se trata de "You Really got me". Pero primero hagamos memoria.

The Kinks es uno de los grupos de rock británico precursor del hard rock, del glam o de la new wave a pesar de siempre estar a la sombra de los Beatles, The Who o Los Rolling. Su mayor éxito "You really got me" (1964) fué su tercer single, para muchos la primera canción de Hard Rock de la historia.

Con un riff distorsionado de sólo dos acordes, conseguido con unos alfileres colocados en el amplificador y la colaboración de Jimmy Page hizo que "You really got me" se convirtiera en un hit.

Comenzamos otra semana más con una de las canciones más sonadas y bailadas del año pasado. MGMT (antes conocidos como "The Management") son un duo neoyorkino formado por Ben Goldwasser y Andrew VanWyngarden.

Aunque llevan juntos desde 2002 su disco debut fué "Oracular spectacular" del 2007. En él encontramos "Time to pretend" y "Kids" el último single extraído del álbum.

Como decíamos antes "Kids" fué una de las canciones más conocidas sobre todo por la melodía del inicio. La canción fué usada ilegalmente por Sarkozy (presidente de Francia) durante la campaña electoral por lo que la banda le ha demandado.

Durante mucho tiempo odié la canción por sonar en todas partes pero tengo que reconocer que ya se ha convertido en un clásico. Os dejo con ella.

Finalizamos esta semana con una novedad. La relación musical entre PJ Harvey y John Parish viene de lejos. Su primera colaboración juntos fué en el álbum de Harvey "To bring you my love" (1995) donde Parish produjo el álbum y tocaba algunos instrumentos.

En el 98 ambos grabaron "Is this desire?" y en este año publicaron su continuación "A woman a man walked by" grabado en Bristol. El primer single del álbum es "Black Hearted Love", una canción de la que se ha dicho que posee "guitarras grunge-pop hipnóticas".

El vídeo, dirigido por The Chapman Brothers, muestra en cámara lenta a PJ Harvey saltando en un castillo hinchable. Una imagen misteriosa e inquietante que pega muy bien con la canción.

We finish this week with a new song. The musical relationship between PJ Harvey and John Parish is very long. Their first collaboration together was on the Harvey's album "To bring you my love" (1995) where Parish produced the album and he played some instruments.

Johnny Cash - When the man comes around

En el 2002 Cash publicó "American IV: The man comes around" su último disco repleto de versiones tales como Hurt (NIN) o Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode). Sólo tres de los tracks incluían canciones escritas por Cash siendo "When the man comes around" una de ellas.

Dicha canción contiene numerosas referencias bíblicas, sobre todo del Libro de las Revelaciones. Nunca se menciona el nombre del hombre al que hace referencia la canción pero se supone que habla de la venida de un segundo Jesucristo.

El videoclip que veis a continuación muestra imágenes de violencia y de altercados, que dan como resultado algo muy irónico conociendo la letra de la canción.

Mañana no habrá entrada nueva, así que si vivís en Madrid feliz puente y si no, volveremos el domingo con una nueva canción.

Panda Bear - Take Pills

A Panda Bear (Noah Lennox en la vida real) probáblemente le conozcais por ser uno de los integrantes de Animal Collective. Pues bien, este chico estadounidense tiene su propia carrera e solitario.

Su debut data de 1998, antes de que se publicara el primer largo de Animal Collective y desde entonces ha publicado dos discos más. "Person Pitch" (2007) es el último hasta ahora y en él se encuentra "Take pills" el último single por ahora.

Curiosamente el videoclip de dicha canción, dirigido por Brian DeGraw, se ha presentado reciéntemente, dos años más tarde. En él la canción ha sido variada ligeramente.

Aunque hace unos meses publicó "Years of refusal" volvemos a traer al Moz a este blog. En 2006 Morrisey publicó "Ringleader of the tormentors" un álbum grabado en Roma que se acercaba más al rock y que contaba con Tony Visconti (Bowie, T.Rex) como productor.

El primer single extraído de "Ringleader of the tormentors" fué "You have killed me" donde encontramos una referencia al film "Accattone" a Fellini y a Luchino Visconti, como muestra de la influencia que la cultura italiana tuvo en la grabación del disco.

El vídeo prosigue con la estética italiana que antes mencionábamos. Como podréis ver a continuación en el clip aparece Morrissey actuando en uno de aquellos programas setenteros italianos, con un público poco interesado en la actuación.

Although some months ago he released "Years of refusal" we talk again on this blog about Moz. On 2006 Morrissey released "Ringleader of the tormentors", an album recorded on Rome close to rock and which it had as producer Tony Visconti (Bowie, T.Rex).

The first single of "Ringleader of the tormentors" was "You have killed me" where we can find a reference of the film "Accattone", and a reference to Fellini and Luchino Visconti, a proof of the influence that the Italian culture had on the record of the disc.

Lovebugs es un quinteto de britpop procedente de Suiza y liderado por Sebastian "Baschi" Hausmann. 15 años de carrera y más de 10 álbumes publicados les avalan como uno de los mejores grupos de dicho país.

Su mayor éxito hasta ahora era "Avalon", un single de su álbum "In Every walking moment" (2006) que contaba con la colaboración de Lene Marlin. Pero este "The highest heights" (2009) les ha dado el empujón que les faltaba.

¿Y por qué digo esto? Porque esta es la canción que representará a Suiza en el festival de Eurovisión de este mismo año. The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star

Esta semana modificamos el órden de nuestros apartados habituales y comenzamos esta vez con nuestra clásico de los martes.

A los británicos The buggles se la podría catalogar como una banda de "one hit wonder". Dos de sus componentes Trevor Horn y Geoff Downes se conocieron cuando formaban parte de la banda que acompañaba a la diva disco Tina Charles en los 70 aunque no participaron en la grabación del mayor éxito de la diva disco, "I love to love".

A finales de dicha década decidieron formar la banda y grabar su primer single: "Video Killed The Radio Star" en el que colaborarían tanto el famoso compositor Hans Zimmer como la propia Tina Charles (ella hacía las voces femeninas de la canción en la demo). En muy poco tiempo "Video Killed The Radio Star" llegó al número uno de las listas de ventas de Reino Unido lo que hizo que dos años después, en 1981, fuera elegido el video con el que la cadena MTV comenzaría su andadura musical.

Curiosamente, y aunque la banda grabó dos álbumes, nunca salieron de gira y no fué hasta 1998, en un reencuentro de sus componentes, cuando se les vería en un escenario juntos.

This week we change the order of our usual tags and we start this time with our 'oldie'.

We can tag the british band The buggles as a "one hit wonder" band. Two of the members of the band, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes, known themself when they were members of the Tina Charles' band in the seventies although they didn't participate on the record of the greatest hit of the disco singer, "I love to love".

At the end of that decade they decided to form the band and record their first single: "Video Killed the Radio Star", a song where collaborate the famous composer Hans Zimmer and Tina Charles - she did the female voice of the song on the demo. On a very short time "Video Killed the Radio Star" rose the number one of the UK Charts. This event made that two years later, on 1981, the video of the song was chosen by MTV as the first video of the channel.

Oddly, although the band record two albums, they never made a tour and it wasn't be until 1998, on a reunion of their members, when they were on a stage together.

Deerhunter - Nothing ever happened

Deerhunter es un cuarteto, liderado por Bradford Cox, originario de Atlanta y cuya música de estilo post-punk nos gusta tanto por aquí. El nombre del grupo viene del anterior batería del grupo, al que se le pidió que abandonara la banda.

Con tres discos en el mercado desde el 2001 y otros tantos EP's (en unos días saldrá el cuarto) es el último álbum publicado "Microcastle/ Weird era cont.", el más aplaudido por la crítica especializada colandose en varias listas de lo mejor del 2008.

"Nothing ever happened" es uno de sus tracks que en cierto modo me recuerdan a Animal Collective. Os dejo con la versión en directo de la canción. Por cierto, si os gusta su música no dejeis de visitar el blog de Cox, donde se puede descargar gratuítamente material que él mismo sube.

Deerhunter are a band leadered by Bradford Cox, from Atlanta and which post-punk music style likes so much here. The name of the band come from the previous drummer of the band, who the rest of the band asked to leave the band.

They have released three discs since 2001 and three EP's -on a few days the fourth will be published. The last one is "Microcastle/ Weird era cont.", the most clapped disc by critics. It has been named on some lists of 'Best of 2008'.

Me podría pasar horas y horas hablando de la serie "A dos metros bajo tierra" pero como este blog trata de música os hablaré de una de las canciones que se puede escuchar en la serie.

El productor Andy Barlow y la cantautora Lou Rhodes forman Lamb, duo originario de Manchester aunque siempre se les asocia con el famoso sonido de Bristol, el trip-hop.

Desde 1996 hasta el 2004, año de su separación, publicaron diversos discos y un grandes éxitos. En el 2001 publican "What sound" su disco más comercial que incluía su mayor éxito, "Gabriel" y "Heaven". Esta canción se utilizó en la genial promo de la segunda temporada de "A dos metros bajo tierra". A continuación podeis ver un vídeo de la canción hecho por un fan.

Y llegamos al viernes con Les savy fav, una banda neoyorkina (formada en Rhode Island, como los Griffin) no muy conocida hasta hace un par de años, cuando "Let's stay friends" hizo que recorrieran diversos festivales alrededor del mundo.

Tras el periodo de hiatus que se tomaron en 2005, dos años más tarde publicaban "Let's stay friends" (2007) un disco de noise rock aclamado por la crítica especializada. "Patty Lee" es la canción más destacable del álbum posiblemente por los falsetes que se marca Tim Harrington.

El videoclip de "Patty Lee" parece hecho por un fan, descuidado y con cámara en mano. El resultado no me termina de gustar pero he de reconocer que es original. Júzgalo tú mismo/a.

Today we are going to talk about Les savy fav, a band from New York (formed on Rhode Island, as The Griffin family) not very known until a couple of years, when "Let's stay friends" made that they played on some festivals around the world.

After the hiatus time of 2005, two years later they released "Let's stay friends" (2007) a noise rock disc pretty clapped by critics. "Patty Lee" is the most stressed song of the album, maybe because of the falsettos of Tim Harrington.

The video of "Patty Lee" seems made by a fan, careless and made with the camera on the hand. I didn't like the result but I have to admit that this is an original video. What do you think?

Los de Chicago reaparecen por este blog con uno de los tracks de "A ghost is born" (2004). Dicho álbum fué uno de los pioneros en ser publicado antes en internet gratuitamente colgado por la propia banda. A pesar de Jeff Tweedy, líder del grupo, ingresara en una clínica de desintoxicación dos semanas después de la publicación del disco las nuevas canciones fueron bien recibidas e incluso premiadas con dos Grammy.

"The late greats" es la canción que cierra el álbum sucediendo así a "Less than you think" un track de 15 minutos. Quizás sea la canción más inmediata que te puedas encontrar en "A ghost is born".

This band from Chicago appear again on this blog with a track of "A ghost is born" (2004). That album was one of the first on be released on the Internet for free. It was upload by the own band too. Although Jeff Tweedy, leader of the band, joined on a detoxification clinic two weeks after the releasement of the disc, the new songs were pretty clapped and even were awarded with two Grammy.

"The late greats" is the song that close the album following like that "Less than you think", a 15 minutes track. Maybe this is the most immediate song that you can find on "A ghost is born".

Julie Doiron - Me and my friend

La canadiense Julie Doiron, que en sus inicios fué bajista de "Eric's Trip" y publicó canciones bajo el nombre de Broken Girl, es una cantautora de folk rock (y fotógrafa) con casi 20 años de trayectoria.

Su álbum "Woke myself up" (2007) llegó tras tres años de silencio. En dicho LP encontramos una colaboración de Rick White, el que fuera componente de Eric's Trip, además de 11 canciones que se acercan al rock destacando sobre todo la guitarra acústica y la voz de Julie. Es inevitable compararla a veces con Devendra Banhart en sus composiciones.

"Me and my friend" fué el single de presentacion. Su videoclip está dirigido por el que fuera su marido, John Claytor del que se separó durante el proceso de grabación de "Woke myself up".

The Canadian singer Julie Doiron, who at the beginning was bassist of "Eric's Trip" and released some songs under the name of Broken Girl, is a folk-rock singer-songwriter and photographer with almost 20 years of career.

Her album "Woke myself up" (2007) came after three years of silence. On that LP we can find a collaboration of Rick White, who was a member of Eric's Trip, besides 11 songs close to rock stressing the acoustic guitar and the voice of Julie above all. It's inevitable that you compare her to Devendra Banhart because of her songs.

"Me and my friend" was the first single. The video was directed by Julie's husband, John Claytor, who broke up with her during the recording of "Woke myself up".

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

Retrocedemos 12 años atrás, hasta 1997, para hablar de nuestro oldie de hoy. The Verve, una de las bandas secundarias en el britpop de los 90, alcanzó el punto álgido en su carrera musical con el álbum "Urban Hymns".

Su álbum predecesor "A northern soul" había distanciado a Richard Ashcroft y Nick McCabe pero en 1996 volvieron a reunirse dando como resultado "Urban Hymns", disco premiado con un brit al mejor álbum británico y considerado como uno de los mejores de música alternativa de los últimos años.

De él extraemos su mayor hit "Bitter Sweet Symphony" cuya melodía del violín es un cover de una grabación de Oldham. El videoclip que acompañaba a la canción, rodado en Hoxton, fué igual de famoso que el track. En él vemos a Ashcroft recorriendo una calle haciendo que muchos de los que caminan en sentido contrario se lleven algún empujón. Pasarían 11 años hasta la publicación de nuevo material de la banda.

We go back 12 years, until 1997, because we are going to talk about the oldie of today. The Verve, one of the secondary britpop bands of the 90's, rose the climax of their musical career with the album "Urban Hymns".

Their previous album "A northern soul" distanced Richard Ashcroft from Nick McCabe but in 1996 they return and the result was "Urban Hymns", an awarded disc with the Brit of 'Best British Album' and considered as one of the best alternative music discs of the lasts years.

From that disc we can find their greatest hit "Bitter Sweet Symphony" which the melody of the violin is a cover of an Oldham's record. The video that belongs to the song, filmed on Hoxton, was as famous as the song. On the video we can watch Ashcroft walking on a street while he shove one's way through. It won't be until 11 years later when the band released a new disc.

The war in drugs es un trío de folk rock estadounidense que posee una corta trayectoria musical hasta ahora. Esta banda, liderada por Adam Gramduciel, tiene como influencias a Sonic Youth, Springsteen o Dylan.

The war in drugs había autoeditado dos demos antes de la publicación de su álbum debut "Wagonwheel blues", álbum que apareció en las listas de los mejores discos del año pasado.

En dicho LP encontramos canciones con cierto aroma a la américa profunda, mezcladas con algo de psicodelia en sus directos. La canción de hoy, "Taking the farm", además de ser su single, es la que más sobresale en el álbum. Que lo disfruteis.

Maxïmo Park es una banda inglesa de rock alternativo formada en el 2000. El nombre de la banda es una adaptación de "Parque Máximo Gómez" situado en Cuba.

En el 2005 publicaron "A certain trigger" su primer largo lleno de canciones dinámicas, al que luego le sucederían otros dos discos más y uno que se publicará en unos días. De su álbum debut vendieron trescientas mil copias y fueron nominados al Mercury Price.

En "A certain trigger" encontramos "Apply Some Pressure", el segundo single publicado por la banda. El videoclip (que me recuerda a la escena de Mary Poppins donde los niños limpian su cuarto y los muebles comienzan a cobrar vida) está dirigido por Jaron Albertin.

Maxïmo Park are an alternative rock English band formed on 2000. The name of the band is an adaptation of "Parque Máximo Gómez" on Cuba.

On 2005 they released "A certain trigger", their first disc with dynamics songs, and then it will be followed by two another discs - one will be released on a few days. They released three hundred thousands discs of their debut album and they were nominated to the Mercury Price.

Otro sábado más os traemos una novedad musical. Hoy le toca a Richard Melville Hall, o lo que es lo mismo, a Moby. Este prolífico compositor y cantautor se ha movido por diversos estilos musicales, desde la electrónica (estilo que más destaca en su discografía) hasta el pop-rock.

Tras diversos éxitos mundiales tales como Porcelain o Why does my heart feels so bad, recopilados en el álbum "Go. The very best of Moby" (2006) Moby vuelve a traernos nuevo material en "Wait for me", álbum que se publicará en unas semanas.

Ya conocemos el single de adelanto, este "Shot in the back of the head". El inexplicable videoclip ha sido dirigido por David Lynch, algo que no es de extrañar puesto que en el primer gran éxito de Moby, "Go"(1991) usaba un tema de la serie de Twin Peaks como cover y durante el proceso de grabación de "Wait for me" los dos artistas mantuvieron el contacto.

Today we talk again about a new song. Let's talk about Richard Melville Hall although maybe you know him by the name of Moby. This prolific composer and singer-songwriter has moved between different song styles, from electronic (the most stressed style) to pop-rock.

After some mundial hits like Porcelain or Why does my heart feels so bad, compiled on the album "Go. The very best of Moby" (2006), Moby bring us again new songs on "Wait for me", an album that will be released in a few weeks.

We know already the first single, this "Shot in the back of the head". The inexplicable video has been directed by David Lynch, which it's not strange because Moby used a song of the Twin Peaks' OST as cover in his first greatest hit "Go" (1991) and they (Lynch and Moby) have discussed during the course of the record of "Wait for me".

Iniciamos el mes de mayo y la fiesta nacional con este trío británico de post-punk influenciados por Gang of four.

The young knives comenzaron su carrera musical llamándose "Simple Pastoral Existence", después "Pony club" y por último "The young knives" coincidiendo con la publicación de su mini-álbum debut. Desde entonces han editado tres discos y otros tres EPs.

El último, "Superabundance", se publicó el año pasado y de él se extrajeron dos singles: "Terra Firma" y este "Up all night" en el que se ridiculiza la bohemia inglesa e insta a todos a estár despiertos toda la noche. El videoclip que acompaña a esta entrada está dirigido por thirtytwo.

M83 es un duo francés de electrónica (sí, hay más a parte de Air) en activo desde el 2001. Con varios discos en su haber su último álbum es Saturdays = Youth (2008) producido por Ken Thomas (conocido por su trabajo con Sigur Rós o Suede entre otras) Ademas de todo esto el dúo ha hecho remixes para grupos como Goldfrapp o Placebo.

"We own the sky" es su single más actual. La elección del videoclip se realizó a través de un concurso. Al final el elegido fué el que se puede ver en esta entrada realizado en Los Ángeles por Alex Takacs.

M83 are an electronic French duo - yes, there are more electronic bands apart from Air. They were on active service since 2001. They have released some discs but their last album is Saturdays = Youth (2008) produced by Ken Thomas - known because of his work with Sigur Rós or Suede. Besides, this duo have done remixes for Godlfrapp or Placebo.

A estas alturas ¿quién no ha escuchado alguna vez en su vida a Radiohead? Los británicos llevan casi dos décadas en activo cosechando premios y buenas críticas.

Tras el estupendo "OK Computer" llegó "Kid A" (2000) que seguía la estela de su predecesor pero con un sonido más minimalista. En él se encuentra "Idioteque" una canción de la que Yorke nunca ha explicado el sentido de su letra pero que muchos han interpretado que habla de una guerra tecnológica o un desastre ecológico.

En el videoclip oficial se puede ver al grupo tocando la canción (la cual es un poco diferente a la versión del disco) en un estudio. Curiosamente hasta el 2007 no volvería a aparecer la banda entera en un videoclip.

Who has not listened to Radiohead yet? This British band are on active service since almost two decades getting awards and good critics.

After the great "OK Computer" came "Kid A" (2000) which followed the way of its predecessor but with a more minimalist sound. On that disc you can find "Idioteque", a song which Yorke has never explained the sense of the lyrics but a lot of people had interpret that it talks about a technological war or an environmental disaster.

On the official video we can watch the band playing the song -which is a little different of the disc version- on a studio. Oddly, until 2007 the band hasn't appeared on a video together.

Kim Carnes - Bette Davis eyes

La cantante de voz característica Kim Carnes protagoniza el oldie de esta semana.

Su mayor éxito, "Bette Davis Eyes" (canción aparecida en el álbum "Mistaken Identity") fué escrita y grabada en 1974 por Jackie De Shannon y con la ayuda de Donna Weiss, pero no sería hasta 1981, año en que Carnes la publicó tras realizar unos arreglos instrumentales, cuando la canción alcanzó el número 1 y fué premiado con dos Grammys.

Muchas son las versiones que se han realizado de la canción, siendo quizás la que más llama la atención la interpretada por la actriz Gwyneth Paltrow para el film "Duets" (2000).

The singer of a characteristic voice Kim Carnes star in the oldie of this week.

Her greatest hit, "Bette Davis Eyes" -a song appeared on the album "Mistaken Identity"- was written and recorded on 1974 by Jackie De Shannon and with the help of Donna Weiss but it wasn't be until 1981, the year that Carnes released it after do some instrumental arrangements, when the song reached the number one and it was awarded with two Grammys.

Bombay Bicycle Club - Evening / Morning

Volvemos a la normalidad con Bombay Bicycle Club, una banda británica cuyos jovencísimos componentes comenzaron a tocar en el 2006 tras ganar un concurso de nuevos talentos realizado por Channel 4.

Al año siguiente publicaron dos EPs, el segundo de ellos producido por Jim Abbiss (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys), y comenzaron su primera gira británica. En el 2008 abandonaron definitívamente el instituto y comenzaron a grabar su primer álbum, "I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose".

Aunque dicho álbum aún no ha sido publicado su primer single data del año pasado y es este "Evening / Morning". Un buen grupo para introducir a los adolescentes a la música alternativa.

We return to a normal week with Bombay Bicycle Club, a British band which young members started to play on 2006 when they won a contest of new talents broadcasted by Channel 4.

The next year they released two EP's, the second of that was produced by Jim Abbiss (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys), and they started their first British tour. On 2008 they left definitely the high school and thet started to record their first album, "I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose".

Although that album has not released yet, their first single dates form last year. It's "Evening / Morning". A good band for introduce teenagers to alternative music.

Finalizamos la semana del indie nacional con Delorean, una banda originaria de Zarautz nacida en el 2000. En su música encontramos tanto pop a lo Elliot Smith como reminiscencias ochenteras de grupos como The Cure o New Order.

En sus discos más recientes "The metropolitan Death" y "Into the plateau" el grupo se acerca definitívamente a la música de baile rodeándose de los mejores Dj's para la edición de los álbumes.

En el 2007 publicaron en el mercado anglosajón "Trasanlantic Kk" que incluía las canciones de "Into the plateau" más algún bonus track. Entre ellas se encuentra "As time breaks off", canción que fué publicada como single en vinilo con diferentes remixes del tema. Disfrutad del videoclip.

We finish the 'National Indie Week' with Delorean, a band from Zarautz and formed on 2000. In their music we can find pop Elliot Smith style with eighties influences of band like The Cure or New Order.

On their more recent discs "The metropolitan Death" and "Into the plateau" the band is definitely closer to the electronic music with the best Dj's for the edition of the albums.

La bien querida - De momento abril

La novedad musical de hoy se encuentra aún englobada en nuestra semana dedicada al indie nacional. Probablemenete ya hayas escuchado esta canción pero vamos a descubriros quien está detrás de "La bien querida".

"La bien querida" es Ana Fernandez, una chica madrileña y Antonio Luque (Sr. Chinarro), su padrino musical. De ella oimos hablar por primera vez en el 2007, cuando su maqueta obtuvo muy buenas críticas en revistas especializadas. Después firmaría un contrato discográfico con Elephant y comenzaría la grabación de su primer largo, "Romancero".

El single de presentación de "Romancero"(2009) es este "De momento abril". Es la primera canción que escucho de esta chica y la verdad es que me recuerda a Amaral cuando se les podía escuchar y a Los Planetas en cuanto a la letra y el rítmo de la canción. El vídeo lo firma Marc Lozanoy está rodado en Barcelona.

The new song of the week is still being part of the 'National Indie Week' . Maybe you listened to this song before but we are going to discover who is behind "La bien querida".

"La bien querida" is Ana Fernández, a girl from Madrid and Antonio Luque (Sr. Chinarro), their musical sponsor. We heard talking about her for the first time in 2007 when her maquet had very good critics on the specialty magazines. After that she signed up a musical contract with Elephant and she started to record her first disc: "Romancero".

The first single of "Romancero" (2009) is this "De momento abril". This is the first song that I heard of this girl and the truth is she reminds me Amaral when they were listenable and Los Planetas talking about lyrics and rythm of the song. The video is directed by Marc Lozano and it was shot on Barcelona.

Este viernes de nuestra semana especial sobre el indie nacional os traemos a "The unfinished sympathy", un quinteto barcelonés liderado por Eric Fuentes y que empezaron a tocar en el 2001.

Su cuarto álbum "We push, you pull" les ha terminado de consolidar. Fué publicado en el 2006 y en él encontrábamos canciones tanto en inglés como en español. Además fué el primero publicado con la discográfica madrileña Subterfuge, especialista en grupos alternativos patrios.

"Spin in the rye", una de sus canciones más conocidas, estaba incluida en "We push, you pull". Con este disco el grupo cambiaba un poco de estilo acercándose a un sonido más americano y para muestra la canción. Hace unas semanas publicaron su siguiente álbum "Avida Dollars" y anunciaron su asistencia en el FIB de este año. Aun así ahora os dejo con "Spin in the rye"

On this Friday of our special week about national indie we are going to talk about "The unfinished sympathy", a band from Barcelona leadered by Eric Fuentes and they started to play on 2001.

Their fourth album "We push, you pull" made themself known. It was released on 2006 and on it we can find songs on English and on Spanish. Also it was the first disc released with the record company Subterfuge, an especialist talking about Spanish alternative bands.

"Spin in the rye", one of their most known songs, was included in "We push, you pull". With this disc the band changed a little bit, being more close to a more North American sound and this song is an example. Some weeks ago they released their next album "Avida Dollars" and they announced their attendance to the FIB of next year. Here is "Spin in the rye".

Vetusta Morla - Sálvese quien pueda

Los madrileños Vetusta Morla lo están petando allá por donde van. Su disco debut "Un día en el mundo" ha recibido varios premios de la música y el nombre del grupo ya no es desconocido dentro del panorama nacional.

Sálvese quien pueda es quizás su canción más conocida. El vídeo de la canción está dirigido por Álvaro León y en él vemos al grupo jugar una partida de ajedrez contra un hombre bastante serio.

Si aún no los has visto en directo el grupo estará esta temporada en diversos festivales nacionales tales como el Bilbao BBK Live en julio o el Festival Do Norte la próxima semana.

This band from Madrid are very famous wherever they go. Their first disc "Un día en el mundo" has received many 'Premios de la Música' - a Spanish music awards- and the name of the band is very known on the national panorama.

Sálvese quien pueda is maybe their most known song. The video of the song is directed by ÁLvaro León and on it we can watch the band playing chess against a pretty serious man.

If you haven't seen them on a concert, the band will be this season on some national fetivals on Spain as Bilbao BBK Live on July or Festival Do Norte next week.

Love of lesbian - Universos infinitos

Seguimos en nuestra semana del indie nacional con Love of Lesbian un grupo catalán que se dieron a conocer finalistas del concurso de maquetas organizado por la revista Ruta 66.

"Cuentos chinos para niños del Japón" (2007) es su álbum más célebre. Los sintetizadores y los teclados destacan por encima de las guitarras. Además todas sus letras están en español al igual que "Maniobras de escapismo" su álbum precedente.

"Universos infinitos" fué el single de presentación, una canción que va cobrando intensidad según va avanzando. A continución podéis ver el vídeo que la banda realizó para la canción.

We are still on our 'National Indie Week' with Love of Lesbian, a Catalan band who mde themself knwon being the finalists of the demo contest created by the magazine Ruta 66.

"Cuentos chinos para niños del Japón" (2007) is their most known album. Synthesizers and keybords stress above guitars. All their lyrics are on Spanish too, just like "Maniobras de escapismo" their most recently album.

Sexy Sadie - Someone like you

El oldie de esta semana nos traslada bien cerquita en el tiempo, casi 10 años atrás. En el 2000 Sexy Sadie, grupo que toma su nombre de una canción de los Beatles, publicaba su quinto álbum en el idioma de Shakespeare: Butterflies.

En dicho LP encontramos Someone like you, su canción más célebre en los 14 años de carrera del grupo debido a que apareció en diversos anuncios.

Aunque la banda se disolvió en el 2006 en este mismo año han vuelto para realizar una minigira con la que fuera su discográfica, Subterfuge, aunque probablemente no habrá más álbumes del grupo.

On that LP we can find Someone like you, their most knwon song in the fourteen years of musical career of the band because it appeared on different commercials.

Although the band broke up on 2006 on this year they have returned because they are going to do a little tour with their old record company, Subterfuge, but probably there won't be more new albums.

Catpeople - Sister

Inauguramos con CatPeople la semana del indie nacional en la que nos centraremos en los grupos patrios que más destacan en el panorama alternativo.

CatPeople es actualmente uno de los más punteros en ese aspecto. Fundados en Vigo pero residentes en Barcelona este sexteto tiene en su haber dos álbumes. El segundo 'What's the time Mr. Wolf?' se publicó en noviembre del año pasado.

Al escuchar Sister, su canción más importante hasta la fecha, muchos les podrán comparar con Interpol o incluso a Editors por su estilo musical. Podeis comprobarlo en el video de a continuación.

We open the 'National Indie Week' with Catpeople. This week we are going to pay atention to bands from Spain that stress on the alternative panorama.

Catpeople are right now one of the most knwon bands. They come from Vigo but they live on Barcelona. The band is formed by six members and they have released two discs. The second disc 'What's the time Mr. Wolf?' was released on November of the last year.

If you listen Sister, their most important song so far, maybe they remind you Interpol or even Editors because of their musical style. You can check it on the video below.

Bowerbirds - In Our Talons

La banda estadounidense Bowerbirds es un trío compuesto por Mark Paulson, Phil Moore y su novia Beth Tacular. Durante un tiempo Phil trabajaba grabando sonidos de aves para el museo de Ciencias Naturales de Carolina del Norte y por eso el nombre del grupo es el mismo que el de un tipo de ave.

Durante todo el 2008 el álbum debut del grupo, "Hymns For a Dark Horse", fué aclamado con críticas favorables. En dicho disco puedes encontrar canciones de estilo folk agrario lo-fi. Tras su éxito con el disco decidieron realizar un videoclip de su mejor y más pegadiza canción, In Our Talons.

El video está dirigido por Alan Poon y en él vemos flores, mantis religiosas y demás fauna. Se nota que a estos chicos les gusta la naturaleza.

The North American band Bowerbirds are a trio formed by Mark Pulson, Phil Moore and his girlfriend Beth Tacular. For a while, Phil worked recording sounds of birds for the Natural Museum of North Caroline and that's why the name of the band is the same name of a kind of bird.

During 2008 the debut album of the band, "Hymns For a Dark Horse", was acclaim with good critics. On that disc you can find folk agrarian lo-fi songs. After their success with the disc, they decide to make a video of their best and catchiest song, In Our Talons.

The video is directed by Alan Poon and on it we can watch flowers, praying mantis and more fauna. I think this guys love Nature.

Riceboy sleeps - All the big trees

Riceboy sleeps nace en Islandia como un proyecto paralelo de Jónsi, cantante de Sigur Rós. Dicho proyecto, en el que Jonsi cuenta con su novio Alex Somers, contiene canciones instrumentales de caracter ambiental.

Por ahora sólo se han publicado dos singles: "All the Big Trees" and "Daníell In the Sea", canciones que aparecerán en su álbum debut previsto para verano.

Aunque "All the big trees" se conoce desde hace un año la traigo ahora como novedad, a unos meses del nuevo álbum. Os dejo con el videoclip.

Riceboy sleeps was born on Iceland as a parallel project of Jónsi, singer of Sigur Rós. That project, which Jónsi works with his boyfriend Alex Somers, has instrumental songs of environmental character.

For now they they have released two singles: "All the big trees" and "Daniel in the sea", songs that will appear on their debut album which publishment is planned to this summer.

Los australianos Cut copy son un trío dance-punk cuyas influencias más notables son New Order o Daft Punk.

Tras algunos EPs, su primer álbum llegó en el 2004. "Bright like neon love", escrito y producido por Dan Whitford (uno de los componentes del grupo), cosechó buenas críticas. El año pasado publicaron "In Ghost Colours", disco incluído en la mayoría de las listas de los mejores álbumes del 2008 de las revistas y webs especializadas.

Su single "Hearts on fire" fué una de las canciones más escuchadas el año pasado. El videoclip que podeis ver en esta entrada está dirigido por el japonés Nagi Noda, fallecido meses más tarde de rodar el video.

The Australian band Cut copy are a dance-punk trio which more notable influences are New Order or Daft Punk.

After some EP's, their first album vas published on 2004. "Bright like neon love", written and produced by Dan Whitfrod -one of the members of the band-, achieved good critics. Last year they released "In Ghost Colours", a disc included on the most of the best albums of 2008' lists of musical magazines and specialty webs.

El grupo indie sueco con mayor número de componentes (cerca de la treintena) debutó en 2006 con el álbum "Let me introduce my friends" tras la publicación de un EP aclamado por la crítica.

En dicho LP se encuentran canciones de melodías y estribillos pegadizos de indie-pop como el single "We're from Barcelona" o "Treehouse", compuesta por el lider de la banda Emanuel Lungren.

El año pasado el grupo publicó "Who killed Harry Houdini?" un álbum que no ha cumplido con las espectativas de los fans. Nos quedamos con el directo de "Treehouse" en el festival británico "The end of the road festival" del 2006.

Me and Bobby McGee fué escrita por el cantante y actor Kris Kristofferson e interpretada por primera vez por Roger Miller. Durante los siguientes cinco años fué versionada por más de 15 intérpretes pero la versión de mayor éxito fué la de Janis convirtiéndose así en el segundo número uno póstumo en cuestión de ventas (el primero se le atribuye a Otis Redding y "Sittin' on the dock of the bay")

Comenzamos la semana con uno de los mayores éxitos indie de los últimos años. "La canción de los sillbidos" como también se la conocía pertenece al grupo sueco Peter, Bjorn & John y cuya voz femenina pertenece a Victoria Bergsman, líder del grupo The Concretes.

En el 2006 se publicó el tercer disco de la banda, Writer's Block, álbum que contiene Young Folks. El éxito de la canción fué tal que su melodía apareció en infinidad de anuncios, series de televisión, videojuegos e incluso se han hecho versiones en distintos idiomas.

El vídeo que acompañaba la canción estaba hecho íntegramente de dibujos animados y estaba dirigido por Ted Malmros y Graham Samuels.

We start the week with one of the greatest indie hits of the lasts years. "The song of the whistles" is how people knew the song and it belongs to the Swedish band Peter, Bjorn & John and which female voice belongs to Victoria Bergsamn, leader of the band The Concretes.

In 2006 was released the third disc of the band, Writer's Block, an album that contains Young Folks. The success of the song was huge and the song appeared on a lot of commercials, series of TV, videogames and even there are versions on different languages.

Calexico - Cruel

Terminamos esta semana vacacional con Calexico, un grupo del que ya hablamos hace unos meses. El nombre del grupo es una mezcla entre California y México aunque cada vez se le relaciona más con su música.

Garden Ruin (2006) es el álbum más diferente con respecto los anteriores puesto que Joey, líder de la banda, canta en algunos de los temas, algo poco habitual en anteriores grabaciones. Aún así fué aclamado por la crítica.

Cruel es el track que abre el disco y en él se habla de la corrupción medioambiental. Quizás sea una de las canciones más representativas del estilo musical en el que Calexico se desenvuelven. Os dejo con el videoclip.

We end this week of holidays with Calexico, a band which we talked here some months ago. The name of the band is a mix between California and Mexico although it is related to their music more and more.

Garden Ruin (2006) is a more different album with regard to the previous discs because Joey, the leader of the band, sing some songs, something unusual in their previous albums. Even so, it was applauded by critics.

Cruel is the track that opens the disc and it talks about the environmental corruption. Maybe it is one of the most representative songs of the musical style that Calexico does. Here is the video.

Como novedad semanal os traigo a este grupo de electrorock alemán formado por Jonas Poppe, Sebastian Dassé y Joe Dilworth, ex batería de Ad N to X.

A Kissogram los conocí la semana pasada ya que son teloneros en la actual gira de Franz Ferdinand por Europa, pero no son nuevos en esto de la música. Tras 10 años de carrera acaban de publicar su tercer álbum, "Rubber & Meat" el cual ha sido producido por Pelle Gunnerfeldt responsable de alguno de los éxitos de The Hives.

Kasabian es una banda de rock inglesa cuyos componentes, como muchas otras bandas, se conocieron en el instituto. Han sido varias veces comparados con the Stone Roses. El nombre lo toman de Linda Kasabian, uno de los miembros de la "familia Mason".

En 1999 graban un EP demo bajo el nombre de Saracuse. Hasta 2004 no publicarían su álbum debut "Kasabian" álbum con muy buenas críticas. "Empire" (2006), su segundo álbum, incluía "Me plus one". Esta canción pop fué el tercer single del disco.

Dos meses más tarde de la publicación de "Empire" la banda grabó un directo llamado "Live from Abbey Road" en los famosos estudios. De ahí extraemos el video que viene a continuación.

Kasabian are an English rock band which members, as a lot of bands, known each other in the high school. Thay have been copared several times to Stone Roses. The name of the band came from Linda Kasabian, one of the memebers of the "Manson family".

In 1999 they record an EP demo with the name of Saracuse. Until 2004 they couldn't released their first album "Kasabian" with good critics. "Empire" (2006), their second album, included "Me plus one". This pop song was the third single of the album.

Two months later of the releasement of "Empire" the band recorded a 'live' titled "Live from Abbey Road" at the famed studios. From there we bring you the video below.

Jamiroquai es una de las bandas inglesas que a principios de los noventa promovía el movimiento acid jazz. Aún siguen en activo y al frente de la banda sigue estando "Jay" Kay conocido por sus estrafalarios sombreros.

En 1996 la banda publicó "Travelling Without Moving" álbum con mayor diversidad de sonidos y en el que por primera vez se notaban las influencias de la electrónica en su música. De "Travelling Without Moving" se vendieron más de 11 millones de copias y ganaron un Grammy.

"Cosmic Girl" fué su segundo single tras el hit "Virtual Insanity". El videoclip que lo acompaña está rodado en Cabo de Gata y en él vemos una carrera de coches deportivos: dos Ferraris, uno pilotado en el vídeo por su dueño, Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) y un Lamborghini pilotado por el propio Jay Kay.

The Rosebuds es un grupo indie norteamericano compuesto por Ivan Howard y Kelly Crisp, marido y mujer actualmente. En el 2003 firmaron contrato con la discográfica Merge Records con la que publicaron su primer LP: "The Rosebuds Make out".

Tras "Night of the furies", un álbum gótico y oscuro, y la colaboración del grupo a un álbum tributo a The Cure, el grupo volvió a sus orígenes con su cuarto álbum "Life Like" (2008), el primero con material inédito en cinco años.

The Rosebuds are a North American indie band formed by Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp, husband and wife now. In 2003 sign a contract with the record company Merge Records which released their first LP: "The Rosebuds Make out".

Tras Wolftron se encuentra Kenny Choi, vocalista y guitarrista de la banda indie Daphne Loves Derby procedente de Washington. Pero Wolftron no es en el único proyecto que trabaja, también es el creador de Desperado Revenge o Sorry about the fire.

"Flesh and fears" es su primer álbum. Publicado el año pasado, "Flesh and fears" es un disco melancólico donde la voz de Choi y su música es una mezcla entre Iron & Wine y Sigur Ros.

Su single de presentación fué Sugar Skulls aunque nos vamos a quedar con otra de las canciones del álbum: Crystal Skulls.

Comenzamos el fin de semana con una canción de una película, concretamente de la película Closer (2004). Damien Rice es un cantante proveniente de Irlanda que se ha hecho un hueco en el panorama indie-folk internacional con varias de sus canciones más conocidas.

De Damien Rice ya hablamos en el blog, en concreto con su canción "Delicate" del mismo disco que la canción de hoy, "0" (2002). Damien solamente ha publicado dos discos en estudio ("0" y "9"), pero también ha publicado dos directos y un EP con caras B. Aunque pueda parecer algo melancólico estoy segura que te gustará.

Como decíamos antes, "The Blower's daughter" aparecía en Closer pero también en los trailers de la película junto a Natalie Portman, ya que era el tema principal del film. Además, la mayoría de las canciones de Rice han aparecido en series como Lost, Alias, Jericho, House, etc. Se podría decir que se ha hecho famoso debido por su colaboración en diversas bandas sonoras.

We talked about Damien Rice on this blog before with his song "Delicate" from the same disc that the song of today, "0" (2002). Damien has reelased only two discs ("0" and "9") but he has released two lives and an EP with B-sides too. Although he might look like melancholic I'm sure that he will like you.

El quinteto de Portland vuelven a aparecer por este blog pero esta vez con "Summersong" una canción que podíamos encontrar en su álbum del 2006 "The Crane Wife".

Dicho álbum se inspiró en los cuentos del folklore japonés, en especial en uno llamado "The Crane Wife", una historia sobre codicia. A Meloy, líder del grupo, le gustó tanto la historia que decidió componer un disco basado en ella.

Y como curiosidad documentándome un poco sobre este tema, Summersong ocupaba el puesto 25 en una de esas listas de la Rolling Stone curiosas que te encuentras navegando por internet: las 25 mejores canciones para escuchar fumado. Puedo afirmar que no lo he probado.

This quintet from Portland return to this blog but this time with "Summersong", a song that we can find in their album of 2006 "The crane wife".

That album was inspired by the Japanese folklore tales, by one named "The crane wife" above all, a story about greed. Meloy, the leader of the band, liked so much the story that he decided to compose a disc about it.

And as a curiousity, when I was doing research about this song I found that "Summersong" is the number 25 on a curious list of Rolling Stone that you can find on the Internet: the best 25 songs that you can hear when you were smoking marijuana. I can swear that I have not prove it.

The wave pictures es un trío británico con más de 10 años de carrera. Aunque han publicado varios discos, se comenzó a hablar de ellos con "Instant coffee baby" disco publicado el año pasado y el primero con una distribución decente.

"I love you like a madman" fué el segundo single de la banda. Sigue el estilo lo-fi del resto del disco, destacando el solo de saxo al final de la canción.

Su videoclip está dirigido por Darren Hayman, excomponente de Hefner y padrino de la banda, y se puede ver a la banda representando imágenes congeladas a modo de imágenes fotográficas. Sencillo y a la vez original.

The wave pictures are a British band with 10 years of musical career. Although they have released some discs, people started to talk about them with "Instant coffee baby", a disc released the last year and the first one with a decent distribution.

La islandesa más famosa en el mundo de la música sin duda alguna es Björk, una chica bajita original y polifacética ya que ha actuado en algunas películas siendo su papel más importante en de "Dancing in the dark".

Su debut se produjo al inicio de la década de los noventa tras la disolución de "Sugarcubes", grupo al que perteneció hasta 1992. Tras varios discos en el mercado y numerosos premios a lo largo del planeta, en 2001 publicó "Vespretine" donde se encuentra una de las mejores canciones de la cantante: "Pagan Poetry".

"Pagan Poetry" fué le segundo single del álbum al que le acompañó un videoclip dirigido por Nick Knight. Dicho clip es considerado uno de los 20 vídeos más controvertidos por mostrar secuencias distorsionadas de Björk y su pareja manteniendo relaciones sexuales, por lo que fué censurado en la MTV.

Philip Blondheim comenzó su carrera musical bajo el pseudónimo de Scott McKenzie. Junto con un amigo de su madre, John Philips, formó diversos grupos entre los 50 y los 60 hasta que McKenzie decidió comenzar una carrera en solitario y Philips, junto con su ex mujer y otros dos amigos formara The Mamas & the Papas.

San Francisco fué escrita por Philips e interpretada por Scott McKenzie en el verano del amor, en 1967 para promocionar el Monterrey Pop Festival, festival organizado por el propio Phillips. Instantáneamente se convirtió en un gran éxito y en una de las canciones estandarte del movimiento Hippie a ambos lados del charco que aún perdura en el tiempo.

Su música no aporta nada nuevo al panorama independiente internacional, incluso recuerdan a The Magic Numbers o a Belle & Sebastian a veces, pero sus melodías son agradables.

Su primer disco "Young Forever" se publicó en el 2004 y se grabó con un sólo micrófono. De él se extrageron varios singles: "Heliopolis by the night", "Summer's gone" (canción que ha servido de banda sonora en diversos anuncios) o "Love is an arrow". Desde entonces algunos de sus componentes han abandonado el grupo.

El videoclip de esta canción estuvo nominado a los MTV en la categoría de mejor vídeo animado. El premio fué arrebatado por Gorillaz y su "Feel Good Inc."

Aberfeldy are a band formed by the singer and composer Riley Briggs, from Edinburgh and it takes the name from the Scottish town where Briggs went on holidays. Their music don't contribute nothing new to the international indie music, even they remind The Magic Numbers or Belle & Sebastian sometimes but their music is pleasant.

Their first disc "Young forever" was released on 2004 and it was recorded with an only microphone. From that disc "Heliopolis by the night", "Summer's gone" -a song that has been the song of different commercials- or "Love is an arrow" were extracted. Since then, some of the members have left the band.

The video of this song was nominated to Best Animated Video on the MTV Awards. The award was snatched by Gorillaz and its "Feel Good Inc."

José González es una cantautor de folk sueco de raíces argentinas. Especialista en versionar canciones de otros cantantes y llevarlas a su terreno ("Teardrop" de Massive Attack o "Born in the USA" de Springsteen), González ha publicado dos discos y cuatro EP's.

"Veneer" (2003) su álbum debut incluye este Heartbeats, versión de uno de los mayores éxitos de The knife a los que también mencionábamos ayer. Aunque fué su single de presentación no sería hasta el 2005, que el álbum se publicara fuera de su país cuando le llegara el reconocimiento de la crítica.

Si ya habeis visto el vídeo que aparece a continuación habréis descubierto que es la canción que aparecía en aquel anuncio de Sony Bravia en el que un montón de bolitas de colores recorrían las calles de San Francisco a cámara lenta.

La sueca Karin Dreijer Andersson, la cual formara junto con su hermano el duo electrónico "The Knife", acaba de publicar su primer álbum en solitario bajo el nombre de Fever Ray, uno de los álbums más esperados del año.

Con este disco Karin se adentra en un sonido orgánico, con letras que bien podrían haber sido sacadas de una pesadilla, predominando así una estética tenebrosa en todas sus canciones. "When I Grow up" es su actual single tras "If I had a heart".

El extraño videoclip en el que podemos ver a Karin vestida como una especie de bruja de tribu africana subida a un trampolín de una piscina está dirigido por Martin de Thurah.

El fin de semana lo vamos a comenzar con Vampire Weekend, la banda americana revelación del año pasado en el panorama alternativo internacional y los favoritos de Su.

Tras "A-Punk", la canción de la que ya hablamos hace unos meses, el siguiente single del álbum "Vampire Weekend" fué este "Oxford Comma". El título de la canción hace referencia a la coma opcional que se puede poner antes de la "y" en un listado . La idea de este título proviene de "Students for the Preservation of the Oxford Comma" un grupo creado por estudiantes universitarios en Columbia (y como el propio grupo dice seguro que estás pensando "¿A quién cojones le importa una coma de Oxford?").

Como ocurriera con "A-Punk" el vídeo también está dirigido por Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd). Está rodado en una sola toma pudiendo ver así diferentes historias y quedando así como resultado un video bastante original.

The idea of this title came from "Students for the Preservation of the Oxford Comma", a group created by students of the Columbia University -and as the band say, I'm sure you're thinking "Who the hell cares an Oxford comma?".

As with "A-Punk" the video is directed too by Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd). It's filmed in one shot, so we can watch different stories and, as result, is a pretty original video.

British Sea Power es un grupo formado en Brighton en el año 2000. La mayoría de sus componentes se conocen desde la escuela así que previamente estuvieron en diversos grupos antes de formar British Sea Power.

"Do you like rock music?" es su álbum más reciente. Publicado en enero del 2008 ( y reeditado tras la nominación a los Mercury Music Prize) en él encontramos "Waving flags" el que fuera single de presentación del álbum.

La canción (que bien podría pertenecer a los canadienses The Arcade Fire) es un alegato a la cooperación y el respeto ya que en la isla británica, al igual que está ocurriendo en muchos paises europeos, ha habido problemas con grupos radicales que se oponen a la inmigración. British Sea Power are a band formed in Brighton in 2000. The most of their members known themself since school so previously they were in different musical bands before forming British Sea Power.

"Do you like rock music?" is their most recent album. It was released on January of 2008 -an re-edited after the nomination to the Mercury Music Prize- and on it we can found "Waving flags", the first single of the album.

The song -that it could be of the Canadian band The Arcade Fire- is an argument to the cooperation and the respect because on the British island is happening the same thing that in another European countries, there were problems with radical groups opposed to the inmigration. Here is the video.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow es un conjunto formado por un grupo de chicos provenientes de Philadelphia que comenzó con una colaboración entre dos amigos Ben Daniels y Ever Nalens. Nalens fué el que eligió el nombre del grupo ya que durante unos años estuvo viviendo en UK.

Su primer trabajo fué un EP publicado en el 2006 y titulado "The Sunniest day ever". Un año más tarde llegaría "Scribble Mural Comic Journal" su primer álbum con toques psicodélicos que pueden recordar a My bloody valentine.

En este disco aparece "A mundane phonecall...", su canción más convencional. El clip que acompaña a la canción está dirigido por Diego Denardi y Helena Tokutake.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow are a mand formed by a group of boys from Philadelphia which started with a collaboration between two friends, Ben Daniels and Ever Nalens. Nalens was who chose the name of the band because he was living in UK some years.

Their first disc was an EP released in 2006 and titled "The sunniest day ever". A year later came "Scribble Mural Comic Journal", their first album with psychedelic touches that can remind My Bloody Valentine.

Tom Waits - Downtown train

En 1985 Tom Waits -cantautor de voz desgarrada, compositor y actor estadounidense- publicó Rain Dogs, un álbum protagonizado por matones, putas y demás personajes habituales en las letras de Waits. En cuanto a la melodía, mezcla instrumentos inusuales en su discografía tales como la marimba o el acordeón.

La canción más pop del disco era "Downtown train" y es por ello que se convirtió en el single de presentación del álbum. La canción ha sido varias veces versionada como todo clásico que se precie. Rod Stewart o Patty Smith son algunos de sus intérpretes.

In 1985 Tom Waits -singer-songwriter with a break voice, writer and North American actor- released Rain Dogs, an album starred in thugs, bitches and some characters usuals on Waits' lyrics. The melody of the song, a mix of unusual instruments in his discography such as the marimba or the accordion.

The 'poppest' song of the disc was "Downtown train" and that's why it was the first single of the album. The song has been covered some times like any classical song. Rod Stewart or Patty Smith are two of the singers who has covered it.

Richard Ashcroft - A song for the lovers

Y vamos con otro intérprete británico. Esta vez le toca el turno a Richard Ashcorft líder de The Verve, una de las bandas relacionadas con el britpop de los noventa. Cuando The Verve se disolvió tras la publicación de su gran álbum "Urban Hymns" (1996) y debido a las peleas que Ashcroft mantenía con el guitarrista de la banda Nick MsCabe (a todos los grupos británicos les da por lo mismo) Richard emprendió una carrera en solitario.

Entre 2000 y 2007 publicó tres discos antes de volver a reunir a la banda. El primero, "Alone with everybody" tuvo como single de presentación la canción "A song for the lovers" (2000) que llegó al tercer puesto en las listas de ventas británicas siendo así su canción más comercial junto con "Break the night with colour" (2006).

El videoclip que podemos ver aquí está dirigido por Jonathan Glazer, responsable de videos como "Karma Police" (Radiohead) o "Virtual Insanity" de Jamiroquai. Está rodado en tiempo real y parece que está inspirado en las primeras frases de la canción (I spend the night, yeah, looking for my insides in a hotel room, waiting for you).

The libertines - Time for heroes

Terminamos la semana con The Libertines, aquella banda de Pete Doherty casí más conocida por las peleas internas entre Pete y Carl Barât que por su música.

Los británicos (que en un principio se iban a llamar "The Albiols") publicaron dos álbumes cargados de canciones punk hasta que en 2004 se separaron. Pete formaría la banda "Babyshambles" y Barât "Dirty Pretty Things".

"Time for Heroes" es uno de los singles que se extrajeron de su álbum debut "Up the bracket (2004)" y está basada en las experiencias de Doherty y la brutalidad policial londinense. La letra es una mezcla entre una canción de amor y comentario social. El video musical fué filmado en Madrid y en él aparece el metro y la Plaza de Colón.

We finish the week with The Libertines, that band leadered by Pete Doherty almost more known because the internal fights between Pete and Carl Barât than because their music.

This British -at the beginning the name of the band would be "The Albiols"- released two discs with punk songs until in 2004 they split up. Pete formed the band "Babyshambles" and Bârat "Dirty Pretty Things".

"Time for heroes" is one of the singles extracted from their debut album "Up to bracket (2004)" and it's based on the experiences of Doherty and brutality of the London police. The lyrics are a mix of a love song and a social comment. A music video for "Time for Heroes" was filmed in Madrid, it featured Madrid's Metro and Colon's Square.

Bear McCreary – All along the watchtower

Escribo esta entrada a escasas horas de conocer el final (aunque ya se haya emitido en Estados Unidos cuando postee esto) de una de las mejores series que he visto en mi vida superando incluso a mi idolatrada Lost. Se trata de Battlestar Galactica.

Los seguidores de la serie habrán escuchado esta versión del clásico de Dylan infinidad de veces desde su aparición en la finale de la tercera temporada y no es para menos porque dicha canción es la que acompaña a una de las escenas más importantes de la serie. No revelaré detalles por si alguien tras esta entrada decide comenzar a ver la serie.

La elección de la canción para la serie no fue al azar ya que la historia que cuenta tiene algo en común con uno de los slogans de la serie: esto ya ha ocurrido y volverá a ocurrir. Dylan se inspiró en el libro de Isaías para componerla pero la originalidad reside en la historia cíclica que se cuenta puesto que los protagonistas (el bromista y el ladrón) son los dos jinetes que se mencionan al final. Espero que disfruteis tanto como yo de esta versión.

I’m writing this entry some hours before know the end –although in United States it was already broadcast - of one of the best TV series that I have seen in my life exceeding to the idolized Lost. It’s Battlestar Galactica.

Fans of this serie have listened this version of the Dylan’s song many times since its appearance on the finale of the season 3 and it’s not the least they could do because that song belongs to one of the most important scenes of the show. I won’t reveal anything because maybe someone decides watching it after reading this entry.

The election of the song for the show wasn’t at random because the story that it tells has something to do with one of the slogans of the serie: All of this had happened before, all of this will happen again. Dylan inspire himself on the Isaiah book for compose it but the originality is on the cyclic story that is told in the song because the main characters (the joker and the thief) are the riders who are named at the end. I hope you enjoy this version like me.

The go! team (no confundir con "The go team, una banda de los 80) son un sexteto británico cuyo estilo musical es una mezcla entre indie rock, hip hop y funk.

Su primer álbum "Thunder, lightning, strike" (2004) en parte fué grabado en la casa de los padres de Ian Parton, uno de los miembros de la banda, pero antes de su publicación actuaron como teloneros de Franz Ferdinand en un directo que poco se parecía con la visión original del estudio. Aún así el disco estuvo nominado a los Mercury Price del 2005.

En "Thunder, lightning, strike" está incluído el track Huddle formation, una canción al más puro estilo cheerleader y que puede recordar a New Order (toda una mezcla). El videoclip que acompaña a la entrada pertenece a una actuación de The go! team en un programa de televisión.

The go! team -not related to "The go team", an eighties band- are a band with six members which musical style is a mix of indie rock, hip hop and funk.

Their first album "Thunder, lightning, strike" (2004) was recorded in the parent's house of Ian Parton, a member of the band, but before its releasement they played as support band of Franz Ferdinand on a performance that it had nothing to do with the original version of the studio. Even so the disc was nominated to Mercury Price of 2005.

In "Thunder, lightning, strike" is included this Huddle formation, a song such as cheerleader's songs and it can remind New Order -what a mix-. The video that appears in this entry belongs to a live performance in a TV show.
